Breathe, Live & Smile

  • The feminism hate: People look at you, [especially females] in my experience when you bring up the word feminism. Like the conecpt of women’s right is repulsive. And why I can’t understand why that is. What makes it worst is that everytime a radical feminist or a mysandrist comes out and says something offensive then suddenly the whole feminism concept is thrown under the bus. And it becomes all feminist are toxic forgetting that feminism means different things to different people. It’s so bad that if I don’t want let’s say a male attention, all I have to say is ‘I’m a feminist.’ and conversation ends right in that moment.
  • The Golden Double Standard Rule: Now this doesn’t just apply to feminism but all “controversial” concepts in general. An interesting way to look at it the barbie movie that just came out. I haven’t seen the movie but correct me if I’m wrong. And also for people who want to be like it’s just a movie, it’s for fun, don’t take it too seriously. Well, that’s how ideologies are being indoctrinated. However, back to the premise of the movie whch is built on ‘sisterhood’ with the entire male population portrayed as evil and unneeded in society. Now can you imagine there was a movie that portrayed the opposite ideologies? There are certain things portrayed in the media that would be extremely contriversial if it was flipped. An example I saw a commercial in which a man was made to sit on a woman’s lap and he did look uncomfortable [I don’t know if this was part of the script] but can you imagine if it was a man who treated a woman like that on camera even as a ‘joke’. You know what, I can write a whole novel on this but let’s not get into that right now.
  • The plight of men: Why is that almost always when you want to discuss women’s rights, someone has to bring up the plight of men and say well, ‘they don’t have it easy.’ Yeah no kidding. That’s not what I am saying. 2 things can be mutually correct and I think as a society we have long forgotten about this. Women’s right can be in shambles and men could also be given worst treatments in the same society. I’m not a man so I can’t identify to the struggles of a man, I can try to understand which is quite frankly not the same.
  • Thinking feminsim is men v. women: This I am so tired of explaining in every debate. I don’t know what got lost in translation but feminsim is never a fight of men v women or anything along that narrative. It’s people against msygoingy [and again people have a wide range of what msygony is]. Just like it’s not blacks v whites rather people v racisim. This is literally the basis and understanding this is key. Let me use an example; in Nigeria there are numerous harmful pratices against women but lets zero in on Female Genital Mutilitation [If you don’t know what this means then brace yourself because it can get pretty dark]. Now when you visit the rural parts of certain communities in an attempt to create an awareness about how this is harmful to women, the first resisitant you are met with is the women, mothers or grandmothers, who perpertae these acts on their female children.
  • People try to downplay the injustice against women: It’s still unbelievably aggravating that people still wnat to deny that women are treated poorly. Like nah, we have passed that point as a society. But what’s worse is there are people who just choose to be blind from their place of priviledge. But then again, I wouldn’t blame you it’s hard to understand the issue when it doesn’t directly affect you. But understand that it can affect your girlfriend, your wife, your mother, your female friend and your daughter but then if you don’t care to acknowledge it in the first place, this wouldn’t appeal to you either. You may not acknowledge it but you also know that you wouldn’t stand for it if roles were switched.
  • Throwing around the word patriachy ; It seems that in recent times, partirachy has become a buzzword being thrown around everywhere. You want to know why? because we have been made to believe that every bad thing happens becuase of patrirachy. And most importantly, patriarchy is a trigger word for most feminist, you say that word enough times and there might as well be a chant going and pitchforks on standby. We get so triggered by this word that sometimes we don’t pay attention to what is being propogageted after these words are said. Trust me when I say within the group, psychology plays out in crazy ways and fragments know what can be achieved when human emotions are triggered in the right direction.
  • Matriarchy isn’t the opposite of patriarchy: People don’t know that matrirachy is completely different from patrirachy. Matriarchy isn’t the opposite of partriarchy, it’s a very different system which resemebles a center. I can’t even go deep into this now but I will in the future.

Closing Remarks

These are just icks that I needed to get off my chest because I have been feeling suffocated these past few days.

However, what views would you like to get off your chest?

Disrespectful, rude, sexist or racist comments will be deleted. There are lots of grammatical errors It felt I wrote this in one breath (usually anything women’s rights gets me in that state) but I will be editing it over time so please bear with me.
