Breathe, Live & Smile

People who watch kdrama often say Kdrama improves one’s mental health and people who haven’t seen a  kdrama can’t even begin to relate at all hence why I am making this post. The dramas I will be sharing in this list, I categorize as healing dramas because the drama passes such a distinct message that it has a resounding impact on your mental health.

  • It’s okay not to be okay:

I’m starting with arguably the best drama on this list. Even the title has me intrigued. The drama is based on these 2 main characters, Gang Tae and Koo Mo yeon. Koo Mo Yeon is the female lead a children books writer who doesn’t believe in fairy tales and her books are usually very graphic and grotesque where Gang Tae is a caregiver at a psychiatric clinic who has an older autistic brother.

The drama follows the tale of how these 3 characters and other patients in the clinic battle their mental health. Prepare to see a visual depiction of various mental health issues and how deeply they play out. I would like to credit to the main actors in this drama because they delivered on this project.

The female lead has a very twisted upbringing and a whole lot of mummy issues, she is cold hearted, narcissitic and tempermental. The male lead on the other hand is used to keeping his feelings in ceheck rather than exploding, he also has guilt he hold towards his autistic brother over some issues that happened in ther childhood. Meanwhile his older brother who is austict has attachment issues and doesn’t want to let go of his younger brother.

This drama will have you at edge for your seat for the main plot twist at the end.

  • Extraordinary Attorney woo:

This is another drama that was hard not to fall in love with. I’m a law student and the female lead is a lawyer with a twist to it, she has autistim. I don’t know exactly what autisim feels like because I don’t know anyone personally who has it, but I give credits to this actor because she did her role well.

This movie answered a very importnat question of, Can people with autisim fall in love and also be loved in return?

I got to understand what the world may be like for people with autisim and how the world treats people who have autisim especially in the legal sphere. How other lawyers would try to use this to discredit you and it just shows how as a society, we see people’s disability before we see them.

In this drama, there was a scene where she took on another autistic client who was accused of killing his brother meanwhile he caught his brother committing suicide amd tried to save him but it all got in transaltion and he was to be sentenced to jail.

This drama was a rollercoaster of emotions and I absolutely loved the male lead for the compassion and kindness he showed her. He understood her deeply.

  • What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?

If there was a category for dramas that showcased the best communication between couples then this drama should be taking home the award.

I didn’t even know you could suffer from a trauma you didn’t experience out of guilt until I watched this drama. This drama unpacks a lot and the relationship in it is just perfect.

We also see gaslighting and manipulation at it’s best in this drama, I didn’t know how deep your own parents could easily twist the narrative to favour them and keep an image in front of society.

I’m just about to get into episode 16 which is the final episode but so far, I have loved this drama. There was a mini love triangle but it wasn’t anything big because the female lead always affirmed who was she was interested in from the start. And the scene where she asked her boyfriend for permission to see the other guy just so she can clear the air really portrayed how much she respected him.

Liked I said the communication the main leads was everything, I loved the transperency and honesty and would love to see more of it.

Closing Remarks

There are numerous reasons why I love kdrama. Aside the romance which is unmatched, you get to learn a lot and heal because it’s just not all centered on booze, drugs and sexual intercourse.

However, it’s also fine if you aren’t a kdrama fan. We all have different tastes and tolerating one another is one of the reasons we have lasted this far as human species.
