Breathe, Live & Smile

Disney’s soundtracks always go on to become just as popular as the movie. I could recite just a line from a song and you would be able to tell me what movie it’s from.

For example, ‘The Cold never bothers me anyway.’ is a frozen classic.

‘Mother knows best’ is from Tangled and let’s not forget ‘You’re welcome’ from Moana. Sometimes the excitement from watching the animation translates into unconsciously learning the lyrics of the soundtrack used.

Aside from this, the song helps enhance character development, plot and setting and in some occasions it is used as a tool for foreshadowing and flashbacks.

To set the tone, the song ‘Be our Guest’ from Beauty and Beast was used as a way of showing us just how wealthy the beast is, rather than  do this spread throughout the movie, a 3 minute song proved to be just as effective.

The song doesn’t work in isolation but coupled with the lyrics, the setting and facial expression of the characters it transforms how we perceive the song.

In stark contrast, In little mermaid the song, ‘Poor unfortunate souls’ creates a more gloomy feeling and helps establish who the villain in this tale would be.

Sometimes, The song is used to introduce a new character onto the stage as was expertly done in Aladdin by the track, ‘A whole new world.’ which introduces us to princess jasmine. The song sheds light into the growing feeling between Jasmine and Aladdin and also the new world that Jasmine is being thrust into.

As a tool of foreshadowing, the track ‘When will my life begin?’ in Tangled foreshadows Rapunzel’s eventual escape from the high towers are her return back to society.

A track that shook us to our core was ‘You will be in my heart?’ in Tarzan. The song portrays the affection experienced with a child and their parents and just how deep these bonds go.

Closing Remarks

Disney animations aren’t complete without at least 5 tracks which will be used for different purposes in the same cinematic experience all to enhance the viewer’s pleasure.

Just as songs connect with the audience, so do they connect with the characters themselves. ‘I will make you a man out of you’ in Mulan is a prime example of this.
