Breathe, Live & Smile

Slim girls are the beauty standard”  *cough* *cough* 🙄

Welcome to Nigeria where this cannot be further from the truth. Is there a beauty standard? No one knows because you are shamed regardless of your size.

But today I’ll be zeroing in on the absolute vile things that Nigerians say about slim women. If you still think slim people don’t get body shamed or you want to compare which is worse between slim and fat shaming, I advise you stop reading here. I’m not here to compare notes.

It’s amazing how the moment a slim girl has confidence, Nigerians try to knock you off your pedestal under the pretense of dark humor or it’s just a joke.

Things like “All bone, no meat” , “Toothpick”, “No yansh” , “Letter I or Number 1”, “TD board” and the list goes on are used to describe you.

From family members asking, “Ahan you don’t eat?” To random strangers saying, “Lekpa, come.” It’s infuriating.

Particularly so for me because me and my sister are different weights. I’m slim and she’s fat. (I know the word fat has become a slur online but that is not the intention here, I’m merely using them as descriptive words.)

If I had a thousand naira for every time someone looked to me and said, “you no dey chop for house.” And looks to my sister and says, “I don see where all the food for house dey go.” I would have bought a house by now.

Like I said Nigerians and minding their business is as impossible as no traffic on a Monday morning in Lagos.

They won’t rest until they’ve berated you based off your appearance. It’s an itch they need to scratch if not they will fall down and die.

Nigerians need to do better, body shaming is never a joke 🖐🏽
