Breathe, Live & Smile

Today I was asleep on the couch when a SpongeBob commercial came on. Being half asleep, my brain could barely capture what was going on.

But I remember thinking this lesson that was portrayed would be valueable to share on my blog.

So I’m going to explain what happened in the commercial.

If you’ve watched SpongeBob when growing up or even now that you’re grown up then you would know SpongeBob’s Best Friend, Patrick.

In this commercial, Patrick was old and being taken care of by SpongeBob. By some sheer luck, Patrick was in a retirement home and it was SpongeBob who kinda managed this retirement home. So Mr SquarePants was taking care of both Patrick and a bunch of other elderly people.

SpongeBob being the helper that he always is, took great care of all of them and he was so consumed with ensuring they were fine that towards the end  the commercial, he was old himself and when he saw his reflection in the mirror, he said,”where has the time has gone?”

And at the end of the commercial, Patrick was young and SpongeBob was old. All Patrick did was put a cloth over him and he walked away. Curtains close.

Now that I’ve explained the commercial, let me share the lesson.

Never be so caught up helping others that you neglect yourself.

You can be a kind person. You can be nice. You can be compassionate, empathetic, loving, caring, you can be an angel amongst devils but never do so to your own detriment. Put yourself first always.

Because in the commercial, SpongeBob being the ray of sunshine he always is decided to help out the old folks and did so at the expense of his health and himself. Be was so surprised that he had to ask where the time bad gone.

In contrast, when Patrick was to take care of SpongeBob who was now old because he had spent all his energy taking care of Patrick and all the other elderlies, all Patrick did was put a cloth over him and left.

You can’t help others at your expense. Nothing is worth that much especially if it was for others. You can be the nicest person and people will walk all over you and not even bat an eye of the roles were switched.

Closing Remarks

Your time, energy, mental health and physical health is never worth jepodaising for anyone. No matter who they are, you are your top priority.

Also, have you seen this commercial I’m talking about?
