Breathe, Live & Smile

Production for the live action movie of moana is ongoing, so what better time to revisit the animation and have a little ole discussion on it.

I have talked about Bruno earlier on my blog and how daunting it was for him to be gifted with such powers. And while there have been arguments over whose powers made them the most miserable, most tie off between Dolores and Bruno.

I would like to throw in a strong word for Pepa.

Remember her? Tia Pepa, married to Tio Felix.

Why Pepa? You ask.

Because Bruno could see the future and Dolores basically had the power to know every lie or truth told.

But Pepa, Pepa has the power to control the weather and here’s the catch, with her mood.

Can you even imagine what that must have felt like to have the weather be subject to your mood?

The woman couldn’t even express her emotions without getting heat for it, she needed to be happy always. Not for her sake but for the sake of the town.

If she was mad, expect thunderstorms and lightning, If she was sad, expect a rain cloud. If she was anxious or stressed, expect a tornado. Every one of her emotions had a weather to match. And of course, if she was happy expect sunshine.

How trapped must it feel to always wear a smile on your face and mean it. It’s easy to fake a smile and not mean it  but to smile when you were just angry and mean it, that’s hard.

Imagine as a child she couldn’t even cry or feel sad in peace because then it would rain down cats and dogs. Having such unsuppressed emotions bottled inside isn’t healthy for anyone.

So, I wouldn’t say pepa was gifted rather she was cursed. Because there is no angle in which I look at this from that ends up with Pepa being happy. Little wonder why she was bipolar, always having to switch between different emotions to please others.

She couldn’t feel anything other than happiness. Pepa didn’t even have the luxury of feeling the micro frustrations that plague us everyday. Imagine what happens when she is on her period?

However, Felix , who was a great husband might I add, was Pepa’s safety pin to her grenade. Always there to help her calm down and breathe through each turmoil of emotion. Felix was her true gift because he was understanding of the woman he loved and ensured she didn’t get too overwhelmed.

Pepa was a ticking bomb and Felix was the timer. He never failed to regulate her emotions with her.

Closing Remarks

The real curse is having the weather subject to each of your emotions, but what do you think? Does any madrigal rival pepa’s?
