Breathe, Live & Smile

If you’ve read any of the posts I’ve made about feminism then you would know that often I allude to society’s perception of femininity as weak and fragile.

If you haven’t noticed this then let me jog up your memory. Think of any dystopian novel you’ve read where the fate of the world hangs in the balance and a lead female needs to take the ropes and save the day. We see that it begins with either of 2 things;

  1. She distastes everything feminine and has always been “one of the boys”
  2. She is feminine but has to give that up and ‘man up’ in order to lead the nation.
    And we’ve either seen the movies or read the books or in my case done both and there is this villianation of femininity because it is already insulting enough that it is reduced to make up, dresses and looking pretty [we will be sticking this theme for the purpose of this post] but what makes that wrong.
    Why is it that the idea of a powerful female fatal is one standing on pile of skulls with her sword raised in the air and dripping with the blood of her enemies and in doing so she must look ‘plain’ to signify that she let go of the vain things most women lust after.
    In essence, glorifying masculinity.
    • It was one of the things I loved the most about the closing scene of Maleficent, the scene in which Aurora was seated on a throne looking most beautiful and surrounded by other creatures of the forest. Yes she was a queen but that didn’t mean she had to lose her ‘feminine’ side on the way there.
    • It’s another reason I loved the Korean drama, My dearest, it portrayed so many hidden themes hinting on femininity in the best way possible. The struggle of the women, How they survived the war on their own and the female’s lead charm even in desperate times. She didn’t need to pick up a sword, cut her hair short and march into battle but she fought in her own way and that should not be overlooked.
      Everyone says they are tired of the prince saving his damsel well I’m tired of ‘one of the boys’ themes that almost every strong female lead possesses.
      It wouldn’t hurt to be one of the girls for once.
